About the Research department

The Bar Council Records department has kept records on practising barristers since the 1960s. The Research department has recently started analysing the records data to produce statistics on trends in the Bar.

Other work of the Research department includes:

  • Providing research support for the Bar Council's representative work and the regulatory work of the Bar Standards Board

  • Monitoring equality and diversity throughout the Bar

  • Undertaking social research projects on the Bar

  • Commissioning and managing large research projects, and
  • Maintaining the Bar Council library.
