  • 14 May 2013 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has appointed a new Chief Executive. Stephen Crowne, who will take up the post on Monday 3 June, joins with wide-ranging experience of public and private sector leadership, most recently as Senior Director, Global Education, at Cisco, one of the world’s leading providers of networking equipment.

  • 7 May 2013 - The Bar Council’s General Management Committee last week approved public affairs and communications strategies for our campaign of opposition to the wide-ranging changes proposed in the legal aid consultation paper. With MPs returning to Westminster tomorrow, I am now asking every member of the Bar to write to their MP, expressing their concern.

  • 3 May 2013 - The development of our response to the Ministry of Justice's legal aid consultation continues. Our working groups are preparing the Bar’s collective responses. We have partnered with 38 Degrees, a hugely influential campaigning group with a grassroots membership of over a million people, to raise awareness of the impact the Government’s proposals.

  • 2 May 2013 - The Bar Council has extended the deadline for submission of pupillage applications via the Pupillage Gateway to 17:00 on Thursday 9 May.

  • 29 April 2013 - The Bar Council has extended the deadline for submission of pupillage applications via the Pupillage Gateway to 11:00am on Friday 3 May.

  • 25 April 2013 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, in partnership with the Korean Bar Association, has launched a three-week exchange scheme for Korean lawyers.

  • 24 April 2013 - Updated Bar Council guidance following the Supreme Court February 2013 decision on objective justification in O’Brien v MOJ.

  • 23 April 2013 - A full meeting of the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has resolved to support the right of Sri Lankan judges and lawyers to adjudicate and practise law freely, fairly and independently. The resolution comes following the impeachment of Sri Lanka’s Chief Justice, Shirani Bandaranayake.
