Our conversion rate of twelve-month pupils to tenancy over the last 10 years is almost 100% and we are proud of fostering an ethos of mutual support and collegiality amongst our pupils and Chambers as a whole.

We currently have two six-month vacancies (known in some quarters as 'third sixes') for individuals who have already completed a full pupillage at an A.E.T.O. They will be required to pay the relevant Chambers % towards overheads during their placement but otherwise retain all fees earned. There is no award or other financial contribution associated with these vacancies. The provisions on expenses in Chambers' mainstream Pupillage Policy will apply.

An application for tenancy may be made by the successful applicants towards the end of the six-month period, subject to satisfactory performance in that six-month period.  Any application for tenancy will be considered on its merits during the course of the second three months of the six month placement.  The pupillage committee will, insofar as it is possible to do so, adopt the same procedures and criteria as it does with twelve-month pupils but, in addition, will have in mind whether there is sufficient space and/or work in chambers for an additional tenant and the interests of Chambers' junior tenants and its twelve month pupils.

Justitia Chambers
Fox Court
14 Gray's Inn Road
London
WC1X 8HN

We are a small set specialising in Immigration, asylum and unlawful detention.

We established ourselves in 2016 to address the needs of parents and carers and for those who did not want to be part of a huge set.

All third six pupils we take on will receive intensive on the job training throughout pupillage and into tenancy. We vet all cases given to you and will go through the brief to ensure you are on top of everything. Two of our tenants are over 20 years call. One of our tenants was a solicitor for 10 years.

Any time out needed for carer's responsibilities will be treated as a priority and we will work around it supporting you. We tend to work collectively in our big cases in a job share. This means that  there is flexibility for our members and a collegiate non competitive approach resulting in all our clients being familiar with the barrister team.

We undertake a great deal of direct access work and would welcome an applicant willing to apply for a DA license. If DA litigation were undertaken there would be consistent paralegal back up.

We are looking for someone with a civil/ Immigration and public law background to help us with our growing unlawful detention caseload. We are also particularly interested in applicants with a strong public law / legal research/ drafting background who can take on junior or co counsel work  in Administrative Court and Court of Appeal. We are robust pro Applicant advocates and fearless when it comes to standing up to the Home Office and Court should it be necessary in our client's interests particularly in criminal deportation cases - where our client's are not always popular with the court. We believe in justice for all even former prisoners.

Commission is 10% after tenancy - with 5% in the first few months of tenancy.

Our particular working space is completely conducive to kids coming in on paperwork days. There are 10 children between us so we are more than happy for you to bring your little or big ones. We have a strongly  nurturing environment where we focus on the whole person and your potential.

Any offer of a third six will include tenancy upon conclusion. Our management and finances are administrator and not barrister led.

Please contact Shivani Jegarajah on 07922283009 for further information. Please mail your applications to shivani@justitiachambers.co.uk. Feel free to call for any questions - we are very informal.

9 Gough Square
London

We are currently inviting applications for up to two third six pupils who wish to practise in criminal law only due to an increase in work within this team and exceptional business need. We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate excellent analytical and advocacy abilities, sound judgement and a genuine desire to develop a criminal only practice. Successful applicants will only receive criminal work and will not be clerked in any other practice areas. It is essential that successful applicants are on the general CPS Advocate Panel at level 2.

We envisage that the successful applicants will start with us in October/November with our two 12-month pupils (who will cover work in all areas that chambers practices in), but that is flexible and subject to alternative agreement. No financial award is offered, but during the period of the third six pupillage no chambers rent will be levied. Third six pupils are responsible for obtaining and maintaining adequate insurance (at least £500,000 of cover) through Bar Mutual whilst practising at 9 Gough Square.

These 'third six' criminal only pupils will be able to apply for tenancy in the summer of 2020. It is anticipated that the third six pupils will (upon application) be considered for tenancy alongside our 12-month pupils. [1]

To apply, please send a C.V. and a covering letter, specifying the names of two referees (or attaching references if they are already obtained), to Claire Harden-Frost at charden@9goughsquare.co.uk. Applications will be treated in strict confidence.

We operate an equal opportunity recruitment policy and encourage applications from candidates from all backgrounds regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation, marital status, religion or disability.

Owing to the changing nature of applicants' situations, there is no formal deadline for applications; and we may offer a third six pupillage to a preferred candidate at any time. Interviews will be arranged at the mutual convenience of applicants and interviewers, likely on weekday evenings; reasonable adjustments will be made where practicable

An offer of a Third Six pupillage would be with a realistic expectation of a tenancy being offered thereafter, providing the pupil proved themselves worthy of a place in Chambers.

All applications will be treated with discretion and confidentiality.

The 36 Group
4 Field Court

Gray's Inn

London

WC1R 5EF
Email: steven@36commercial.co.uk

The 36 Group is a well-established multi-specialist set of Chambers.  It has 5 specialist practice groups, each of which operate effectively as ' sets within a set ' .  One of those internal sets is ' 36 Commercial ' .  36 Commercial specialises in a wide range of commercial work.

36 Commercial has a funded pupillage scheme where it offers a £60,000 annual award to the successful applicant for pupillage.  However, in the period between such pupillages, it now finds that there is a surfeit of work suitable for a third six pupil, referred to as a ' probationary tenant ' within The 36 Group terminology.

36 Commercial is looking to recruit one probationary tenant who has not been offered tenancy at a ranked set that specialises in commercial work that falls within the scope of 36 Commercial's work, as can be seen on its website.

Candidates will be expected to be strong academically, already possess or evidence potential for possessing good advocacy skills (written and oral). Strong references will be essential.

As a probationary tenant, you can expect to be kept busy both in court and with written work.

Successful completion of the probationary tenancy period of six months, would lead to an offer of full tenancy by The 36 Group and practice group membership of 36 Commercial.

If you are interested and wish to apply for a Probationary Tenancy, please write to 36 Commercial's Practice Manager, Steven Newbery at steven@36commercial.co.uk and cc The 36 Group's Chief Operations Officer, Rowan Caffull at rowan@36group.co.uk, with the following attachments:

  • Letter of Application, in which relevant practice experience, current practice, ambitions for the future and reason for applying to 36 Commercial are all addressed.
  • CV
  • Computer (e.g. LEX) print outs of any earnings, receipts and current aged debt for work carried out during the second six months of pupillage and, where applicable, during any subsequent period of squatting.
  • 2 references from pupil supervisors.

Applications will be treated in confidence and will be objectively assessed against our Probationary Tenancy criteria.

The application deadline is 4 pm on 29 July 2019. However, prospective candidates should apply as soon as possible, as we may fill the vacancy before the deadline date if an outstanding candidate presents him or herself before then.
