  • 4 February 2014 - With the Ministry of Justice about to announce its position on the 'Transforming legal aid: next steps' consultation, we are intending to bring the whole Bar together on the morning of Saturday 8 February to address the harmful effects of the Government's changes to legal aid.

  • 4 February 2014 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, and the Bar Human Rights Committee have voiced concerns regarding a number of reports they have received (including from Ukrainian lawyers) of Rule of Law concerns relating to the recent demonstrations in Kiev and other regions of Ukraine. In particular, they have been informed that a number of court hearings have taken place against demonstrators who were not given the opportunity to obtain legal representation. It is understood that many of these hearings resulted in the detention in custody of those demonstrators.

  • 20 December 2013 - The Bar Council and the Bar Standards Board have agreed a protocol for ensuring regulatory independence in order to fulfil undertakings made to the Legal Services Board.

  • 29 November 2013 - The Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, is calling on Parliament to examine secondary legislation arising from the Ministry of Justice’s (MoJ) ‘Transforming Legal Aid’ Consultation, which will have serious implications for the administration of justice.

  • 27 November 2013 - Update for the profession: The Bar Council is consulting on its draft Strategic Plan 2014-17, which sets out its proposed direction of travel for the next three years, setting clear aims and objectives. It builds on our last Strategic Plan which covered the period 2011-14. This is a call for views.
