Chambers Management Seminars

Series of chambers managements seminars are aimed at giving barristers, chambers staff including senior clerks a foundation in essential chambers management issues. Ideal for heads of chambers and members of management committees, it will cover governance, finances and people management.

 

Governance 

Tuesday 30 October 2018, 17:30 - 19:00, London

The first of three management seminars will look at chambers' ability to weather risk and indeed thrive. A successful business can be traced back to good governance. This seminar will highlight and discuss all the factors that chambers need to consider, including the different structures for chambers, options for management and what should be covered by chambers' constitution.

The seminar will cover the following:

  • Legal structure - are there advantages to a service company?
  • Chambers' strategy and business development - a top-down approach to the collective operation of chambers;
  • Internal organisation - how chambers chooses to manage itself can vary with size, culture and resources;
  • Decision-making structure and delegation of authority - exploring the options relating to Chambers' meetings, committees and management roles, and how these should be defined;
  • Financial responsibilities and budgeting - how to establish financial security;
  • Members' rights, responsibilities and liabilities;
  • Hiring, firing and succession - of both members and staff;
  •  Provision for legal and regulatory compliance - obligations and the resources needed;
  • Chambers' constitution - what needs to be covered by this key governance document;
  • Provision for regulatory compliance - maintaining policies and Equality & Diversity.

Financial Management 

Wedsnesday 6 March 2019, 17:30 - 19:30

The final session will cover the concerns of chambers' ability to meet its expenses, weather unexpected financial risks that materialise, effectively and fairly apportion costs among barristers, and how to meet financial reporting obligations.

Highlighting the basics of financial planning, starting with an annual budget and cashflow forecast, and looking at how it can be informed by a strategy.
