The Access to Justice Foundation logo

The Access to Justice Foundation is a fundraising and grant making organisation that increases the provision of free legal advice for marginalised communities, and people most in need. We are a charity created by the legal profession. The Bar Council, alongside other professional bodies of the legal profession, are our founding members.

The Foundation had £28.9 million committed to grant funding 119 charities across the UK at the end of 2024. We raise funds through Pro Bono Costs Orders, residual client balances, and other donations and sponsorship.

We can help you achieve your goal to increase access to justice.

Advocate's logo

Advocate is the Bar’s national pro bono charity. We match members of the public who need free legal help with barristers who are willing to donate their time and expertise for those who are unable to obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay. We cover all areas of law, and work in all courts and tribunals nationwide. Over 4,600 barristers, from pupils all the way to KCs, have signed up to volunteer to work on pro bono cases with Advocate. Barristers can sign up after their second six and operate under Advocate’s direct access licence.

The Free Representation Unit is a pro bono legal charity. We provide one of the few opportunities to deliver advocacy in real legal cases prior to qualification.

FRU volunteers represent clients in social security, employment and criminal injuries compensation appeal tribunals. Our volunteers are trained and supported by a team of paid legal officers to take ownership of all aspects of case preparation and advocacy at the tribunal hearing. FRU volunteers gain experience in case strategy, client care, legal research, drafting of witness statements, schedules of loss and submissions, case file preparation, settlement negotiation and oral advocacy.

The Judicial Appointments Commission of England and Wales (JAC) was established in 2006 with a mandate to ensure judicial appointments are independent, transparent, and fair. The JAC’s Targeted Outreach (TO) programme (co-badged with the Judiciary) helps candidates from the four JAC target groups (women, ethnic minority candidates, disabled candidates, and solicitor candidates) prepare for the judicial selection process. The TO programme offers short-term, ad-hoc support centred around the judicial application process. Following acceptance onto the programme, candidates may receive guidance from a member of the judiciary through the Judicial Guide scheme.
