Advocate is the Bar’s national pro bono charity, matching members of the public who need free legal help with barristers who are willing to donate their time and expertise in deserving cases for those who are unable to obtain legal aid and cannot afford to pay. We cover all areas of law, and work in all courts and tribunals.

Barristers can sign up after their second six to take on pro bono cases, operating under Advocate’s direct access licence.

IPSEA is widely recognised as the leading organisation in England providing free independent legal information, advice, and casework support to families with children and young people, aged 0-25, with SEND.  All our free advice services are delivered by a network of around 100 volunteers who are at the heart of IPSEA’s work. 

We also provide training to parents, carers and SEND professionals as well as work to influence local and national SEND policy.

The Free Representation Unit is a pro bono legal charity. We provide one of the few opportunities to deliver advocacy in real legal cases prior to qualification. 

FRU volunteers represent clients in social security, employment and criminal injuries compensation appeal tribunals. Our volunteers are trainined and  supported by a team of paid legal officers to take ownership of all aspects of case preparation and advocacy at the tribunal hearing.

FRU volunteers gain experience in case strategy, client care, legal research, drafting of witness statements, schedules of loss and submissions, case file preparation, settlement negotiation and oral advocacy.

There are four Inns of Court (Gray's Inn, Inner Temple, Lincoln's Inn and Middle Temple) and you must be a member of one of the Inns before beginning the vocational component of becoming a barrister.

The Inns of Court provide a lot of information and resources for prospective barristers. Additionally, the Inns are a major source of financial assistance to students interested in a career at the Bar.

The Bar in England and Wales is divided into six geographical regions, known as ‘circuits’: Midland, Northern, North Eastern, Western, Wales and Chester, and South Eastern. The term "circuit" is derived from an ancient English custom of itinerant courts in which judges periodically travelled on pre-set paths (circuits) to hear cases from different areas so that justice could be seen to be delivered even in what were then comparatively remote county towns. 

In more recent times the circuits have come to provide a source of support, advice and representation for barristers as well as an important source of communication between different parts of the legal system.
