English Law Summit in Kazakhstan

 Kazakhstan

The Bar Council together with the Law Society organised an English Law Summit in Astana and Almaty from 23 - 25 April 2018, supported by the cross-government campaign, 'Legal Services are GREAT'. The Summit brought together businesses and legal professionals across Kazakhstan and the UK to discuss recent updates in English law. The seminars will focus on issues such as international arbitration, corporate governance, anti-money laundering and financial regulation and many more.

Kazakhstan is the largest legal market in the CIS region after Russia and generates a significant number of disputes both in the Commercial Court and in arbitration in London and beyond. In 2016-17 it was listed as the third most frequent litigant country (following the UK and Russia) at the English Commercial Court. It is also a source of significant corporate governance and regulatory/criminal law issues which should make the mission interesting also for members of the Criminal Bar. This visit came hot on the heels of the opening of the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) Court, which is based on best practices and principles of English common law. The visit was a unique opportunity to promote the Bar overall as well as raise your professional profile in this important and developing legal market.
